چکیده

THE P ORCEL LANID CRAB GENUS Megalobrachium, which contains 11 known species, is confined to the new world. M egalobrachium poeyi (Guerin-Meneville, 1855). is, at present, the only member of this mainly tropical, intertidal genus with forms on both sides of the Panamanian isthmus. Originally considered an Atlantic species, it was apparently not collected on the Pacific coast unt il 1926 (see Boone, 1931, p. 150; Haig, 1960, p. 339) and is still considered uncommon on that side of the continent (Haig, 1960, p. 215) with a range restricted to Panama and Costa Rica (Haig, 1968, p. 72). The male and female crabs collected on the Pacific coast and reported herein bring the known total of Pacific specimens to 15. Megalobrachium poeyi has no known analogous or geminate species, although several other species have closely related forms on each side of Panama (e.g., M. erosum and M . mortenseni, see Haig, 1962, p. 191). Because fossils are lacking, it is not known from which side of the continent M . poeyi originally came, and whether the species was an early or recent migrant. It is widely distributed throughout the Caribbean Sea. Its apparent

Larval descriptions of the family Porcellanidae: A worldwide annotated compilation of the literature (Crustacea, Decapoda)

For most of the family Porcellanidae, which comprises 283 species, larval development remains to be described. Full development has been only described for 52 species, while part of the larval cycle has been described for 45 species. The importance of knowing the complete larval development of a species goes beyond allowing the identification of larval specimens collected in the plankton. Morph...

The larval development of Upogebia assisi Barnard, 1974 (Decapoda, Upogebiidae) reared under laboratory conditions from ovigerous femail to postlarvae

The ovigerous females of Upogebia (Upogebia assisi) were collected from Pacha (24o 50 54"N, 66o 43 E) on October 6 and 7, 1994 and 1995 respectively. They were kept for rearing under laboratory conditions at room temperature (25-32oC) in the filtered seawater with salanity of 35-36 parts per thousand (ppt) and pH 7.8-9. Development of larvae proceeds from first to three or four zoeal and p...

Larval development of Hexapanopeus caribbaeus (Stimpson, 1871) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Xanthoidea, Panopeidae) reared under laboratory conditions

The genus Hexapanopeus Rathbun, 1898 contains eight species, of which three are found in the Brazilian coast. The larval development of two of these species has already been studied in the laboratory. This article describes in detail the morphology of the complete larval stages of Hexapanopeus caribbaeus reared under laboratory conditions, and the morphology is compared with that of the larvae ...

A new species of the genus Petrolisthes Stimpson (Crustacea, Decapoda, Porcellanidae) from the Central Pacific, with remarks and new records for P. aegyptiacus Werding & Hiller

Petrolisthes paulayi sp. n. is described from specimens collected in French Polynesia. The new species belongs to an assemblage of morphologically similar Indo-West Pacific (IWP) species, here designated as the "mesobranchial-spine group". All species in the group bear carapace spines, including one or more mesobranchial spines, and transverse, piliferous striations on the dorsal surface of car...
